Ancient Apollonia is considered to be the most important archaeological site in the area of Agia Pelagia.

Many of the archaeological discoveries have been found around Souda cape, located about 500 meters from our hotel. Τhe cape offers a great view of the bay of Agia Pelagia and the open sea. Ancient Apollonia

The first excavations in the area were initiated by the Italian archaeologist Antonio Taramelli, who brought to light the remains of ancient harbor facilities and water reservoirs. In the following years, the excavations continued on the cape of Souda, by Stylianos Alexiou. The new discoveries confirmed the assumption that there were a number of facilities in the wider area of Agia Pelagia that came from the Hellenistic period. These later led to the association of Agia Pelagia with the city of ancient Apollonia.

The most important archaeological discovery was a large-scale building complex, which is thought to be the city’s meeting hall, know as Prytaneion. Prytaneion was the place were local rulers gathered in order to exchange opinions and make decisions about the administration of the area. In addition, they were responsible for the execution of these decisions, while they also controlled the order of justice.
